We got excited about bees when we met Jeremy Quinlan from the Ipswich and East Suffolk Beekeepers Association. He came on the Access to Nature Radio show which we sometimes presented (on Ipswich Community Radio 105.7 FM or listen live on www.icrfm.co.uk at 7pm on Monday evenings). We attended the beekeeping course which he runs early in 2012 and very soon got our first lot of bees – a couple of swarms, a bought colony and some donated colonies. The winter of 2012-13 was very long and hard and although the colonies survived, they struggled through the summer, swarming a lot and not really producing a lot of honey. We are doing more study and hoping to do better next year.
